M/S DIAMOND KNOT
After diving the SS Governor On July 17, 2009 Brian, Jeanna, Richard Jack and Nick Ambrose dived the M/S Diamond Knot on July 18, 2009. Scott Lundy joined us for this dive. The M/S Diamond Knot was a 339' cargo ship that sank on August 13, 1947 after colliding with the Fenn Victory. She had 7.4 million cans of salmon in her holds when she sank.
After the 90 minute ride out, in less than flat seas, we splashed. We used 25/25 for backgas and O2 for deco. Our plan was to keep average depth to 110-120'.
Surface current was ripping! It was all we could do to simply hold on to the tag line while we waited for other team members to splash and get to the line. However, once we reach ~20', the water was still.
This was the first time any of us dived this wreck and to say it's impressive is an extreme understatement. The wreck is enormous, and absolutely carpeted with life. We all had scooters, so we were able to see the entire wreck, from bow to stern. Jeanna, Nick and Richard were team 1 and Scott Lundy and Brian were team 2.
Scootering under the bow, and looking up at the huge wall towering above you is inspiring. The wreck features several large swim throughs...a perfect playground for scootering, but also mindblowing amounts of life and structure to clip off the scooters, kick around and take it all in. Huge schools of rockfish, carpets of metridium and a wolf eel in the stern were just some of the residents greeting us.
Truly one of the most impressive wrecks to experience in Puget Sound.
